Essay #16 Nimrod’s Land of Shinar Part III

“And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.  And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”  Genesis 11:1-4

Shinar is Nimrod’s (Genesis 10:10)  This is Nimrod’s kingdom and the principle cities were Babel, Erech, Accad and Calneh.  The whole earth is now speaking a common language.  After the command to “Go” (Genesis 9:1) and the development of family states that included unique languages (Genesis 10: 5, Genesis 10:20, Genesis 10:31  mankind was ready to “Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”  Genesis 11:4, in admittedly complete disobedience to God who had told mankind to scatter.

Shinar is Nimrod’s land, people traveled from the east and met up with the “mighty hunter before God” and now they are going to build a city/tower to reach unto heaven and make a name for themselves. Haven’t we heard this before?
