Essay #32 The Accursed Thing: Part I

The beginning of the end for Jericho starts with a theophany.

“And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?  And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.” (Joshua 5:13-15).

The land is holy.

“And the city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are therein, to the Lord: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.” (Joshua 6:17)

But the city is accursed and all that are therein.

And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it. But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are consecrated unto the Lord: they shall come into the treasury of the Lord.” (Joshua 6:18-19).

Not only the city, and all that are therein are accursed, but there is an accursed thing that makes the camp of Israel cursed and troubled, but it is not the silver, gold, vessels of brass and or iron, because they are consecrated unto the Lord.

Presumably, you would expect the accursed thing, which is obviously of great significance to the Lord, would have some sort of heinous character about it.

Deuteronomy 4:16-19, “Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female, The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air, The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth: And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.”, gives a pretty good list of “things” that might be accursed.

Deuteronomy 7:

The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therin: for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God.

26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

Maybe the accursed thing would be a graven image whereas a graven image is identified as being “a cursed thing”.

Deuteronomy 12

31 Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God: for every abomination to the Lord, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.

Maybe the accursed thing is an altar which was used for the sacrafice of children that were burned to appease Murdoch?

There are plenty of items that God could identified as being accursed, but the one thing that he identified as being accursed was a “goodly Babylonian garment”.
